Talk: Future of Retail

AT CREA DIGITAL DAY 2019

Is retail dying or booming? Last January, we were invited at Crea Digital Day in Geneva to share our thoughts about a retail industry that is facing both a digital and a responsible transformation.

What resonated most with the audience were examples of sustainable models that are emerging and becoming mainstream thanks to online retail. To name a few:

  • The fast-growing second hand market with platform such as Thredup, Selency or Vinted.

  • The refurbishing industry with success stories such as BackMarket

  • The Recommerce trend: more and more brands are now launching a “second-life” business & experience, following recommerce leader Patagonia, with their dedicated platform WornWear

  • Rent vs Own services are allowing consumers to enjoy a vast choice of clothing or equipment without over-consuming, nor over-spending. Think Rent-The Runway for instance.

  • Subscriptions models such as The Honest Company allow customers and brands to join forces and commit to longer term investments to research and reduce their environmental footprint.

  • Local food and farming, which are instrumental to mitigating the climate crisis, are also benefiting from e-commerce models. Check-out GoodEggs in the US or La Ruche Qui Dit Oui [The Food Assembly] in France.
